Welcome is a new research project focused on the first 30 seconds of engagement with a public building. The project aims to inform, challenge and inspire cultural institutions to become leaders in creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. It will have applicability across the cultural and public sectors.
The initial stages of the project will focus on research and development. People United will meet psychologists, architects and designers; researching the variables that affect how people feel on entering different buildings. We will also gather input from schools, voluntary groups, and members of the local community. People United will be available to share this learning (through guidance and a Welcome workshop) with other cultural and public institutions.
This work aims to be a catalyst for creating welcoming environments and community engagement, as well as helping institutions to reflect on their values in action.
The Welcome project complements People United's Resolutions programme that uses creative techniques to explore and develop social responsibility within arts organisations. This informal and participant-led programme is being trialed in 2011 with a range of arts organisations in the South East region.
The Welcome project is funded by Kent County Council and Canterbury City Council.
We will be publishing the conclusions and other Welcome resources on this web page over the next year. If you are interesting in finding out more about this work, please get in touch.
